Genre as cultural expression

Popular genres can be seen as reflections of the moods, sentiments and values of a society.
Genres can be used as a way of exploring issues within society and culture. A mysterious bacteria infecting a whole population could be a metaphor for our fears of losing our cultural identity.
The James Bond films represent the era's in which they where made. The concerns include; 'The Cold War', 'The Space Race' and 'International Terriorism'. This ability of genres to rap into the popular zeitgeist can explain their popualarity.
Action adventure films reneforce the ideology of the dominant male. Most have a strong male protaganist and a female who serves as a prize.

Genre theory

Genre is;
  • A way of categorising texts
  • Defining codes and conventions for a category of texts.
  • Different from form
  • Culturally dependent
  • Constructed through a series of signs which are linked to that genre.
Genre helps producers standardise production and markting of texts. Genre acts as a guide to viewers. Genre "enabled the industry to try to predict audicence expectation."

Genre theory has played an important part in the discussions of the making of the video. Fiske says that genres are “attempts to structure some order into the wide range of texts” thus codes and conventions come in, something that is shown visually and aurally. Our video, 'Emergency' has the genre of mainly Pop Punk but also has features of emo and alternative rock this will be shown throughout our music video and shown withing the ancillary tasks.

The iconography within this video will be clear so that the audience knows what to expect. Considering the song is about a girl in an Emergency we will do our best to show elements of her being lost and needing help to guide her back home, but instead will show this alienation by her walking alone in London trying to find herself.

Our music video will be a parallel editing video as the band and the narrative will be running along together at different points throughout the song. These scenes will be easily recognized and differentiated because we wanted as a group to portray how the band are in some ways distant from the girl in the narrative, however the lyrics in the song, speak to the lost girl in the narrative in some ways.

We were looking at the lyrics while listening to the song and writing down how long each verse was to help us decide where certain shots could go.

On February 4th we went to Thamesmead near the lake at about 5:30pm as it was getting darker and took theses location test shots to see if and how the location can fit into our music video.
